Keep chickens in Dallas? You bet! More people than ever are flocking to the practical attraction of keeping chickens. We keep them as food producers, we keep them as pest control and compost makers, we keep them as keen amusement, we keep them as beloved pets.

And, we keep them in a variety of different coops! From simple to "eggs"travagant, every coop is a labor of love for our "girls". And, since we want to share with others the joy of keeping chickens, join us for the 3rd annual A PEEP AT THE COOPS: THE EAST DALLAS URBAN COOP TOUR.

Headquarters will again be at Stonewall Gardens & Outdoor Science Lab. Come by for a map of the coops, enter a chance to win a mobile chicken coop, buy a t-shirt, and shop around some fantastic booths.

A Peep at the Coops Is Coming SUNDAY!

Hello fellow chicken fans!

We are looking forward to seeing you this weekend on our urban coop tour in East Dallas! The tour will go on, RAIN OR SHINE! On Sunday May 22 from 11am to 5pm), peep into the dozen coops of your chicken-loving, creative and industrious neighbors who do great things with their urban lots. Some of the coops are simple, others downright amazing -- all will inspire and give you ideas for your own yard. A family-friendly event and the coolest "home tour" in Dallas!

HQ for the tour is Stonewall Gardens (5828 E. Mockingbird Lane, corner of Matilda and Mockingbird). There you can see all raffle prizes and buy tickets, purchase shirts, and also attend chicken-tending seminars given by Dan Probst of Polish Farms. Chicken seminars will be at 12pm and 2pm, and seating is limited. Also at HQ, visit with the Texas Honeybee Guild and the Dallas County 4-H Urbanites Club and their chickens. Of course, you'll get a chance to see the garden that houses a terrific school science program that the tour is helping to fund.

On Sunday, we will have detailed street maps available at Stonewall. The tour is free, but please purchase raffle tickets ($5 each), shirts ($15) and chicken aprons ($20). Or just make a small a donation ($5 per visitor is our suggestion). Many have asked about this, and we welcome and encourage your support for the science program in this way! This garden is the outdoor science lab for Stonewall Jackson Elementary, a public school that has long made outdoor, hands-on learning a priority. The program, including our full-time science instructor, is now FULLY FUNDED BY THE COMMUNITY since district funding was eliminated three years ago!

From simple to “eggs”travagant, every coop is a labor of love for our “girls.” And since we want to share with others the joy of keeping chickens, we are proud to present the 2011 coop tour: A PEEP AT THE COOPS THE URBAN COOP TOUR May 1, 2011 11:00-5:00 Plans are hatching to once again feature coops for city chickens on this FREE, self-guided tour that will take place around the beautiful East Dallas area. The coops will highlight different approaches to keeping and enjoying these pampered pets, "eggsellent" layers, and a great addition to a green lifestyle. Visitors will have the opportunity to see many different breeds of chickens, from small to large, and learn about their unique personalities and characteristics. Several other sustainable practices will be on view as well, such as beekeeping, composting, rainwater harvesting and more! Come and engage in a little "chicken chat" with our interesting hosts and sponsors. This year we are excited to announce that we have partnered with Stonewall Gardens at Stonewall Jackson Elementary School in Dallas, TX, as a fundraiser for their 20,000 square foot outdoor learning laboratory for grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Any profit from our generous sponsors, raffle donors, and sale of raffle tickets and commemorative A PEEP AT THE COOPS t-shirts beyond our nominal expenses go to Stonewall Gardens to continue their mission of supporting the learning garden to increase the students understanding of science and their connection to nature.
